The "Cathedral de la Encarnación" towers over the place of the "Mezquita Aljama" which was the most important mezquita of the city during the eight centuries of the Muslim dominion. In 1528 the construction of the cathedral started and lasted till 17th and 18th century, whereas the work turned out to be endless as the main facade and the south-tower are not completed yet. This circumstance of incompletion has given the cathedral a special expression over the time, and the name "La Manquita" used by people gives credit to that. The interior is dominated by the cultural sculptural master piece of the choir, the carvings of Pedro de Mena, Ortiz de Vargas and Giuseppe Micael Alfaro are exceptional. The two organs consisting of more than 4000 flutes, belong to the rare, fantastic instruments of the 18th century, which are still in use. |
